A group of undertakers in Belgium are proposing a more ecological (but perhaps creepier) alternative to cremation: they hope to dissolve corpses in a caustic solution and flush the resulting liquid and ashes down the drain, which will be recycled at water treatment plants.

A genetically modified strain of maize classified as NK603 -- one that is explicitly banned in the European Union -- has been unleashed in Germany. The crop has been unwittingly planted on nearly 7,500 acres so far, and is continuing to spread.

Once again, it looks like Europeans get the most fuel-efficient cars. VW has unveiled the diesel engine that will power its Polo Bluemotion and help it achieve a pretty impressive 71.3 MPG US, or 87 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
